Tour overview
Decades of communist rule left deep marks on Romania, and nowhere is this more visible than in Bucharest. From vast housing estates and demolished historic districts to churches relocated on rail tracks and colossal state buildings, the city still carries the legacy of that era.
Join us as we uncover the story of communism’s impact on Bucharest and explore key sites tied to some of the most important moments in recent Romanian history—such as the Revolution of 1989 that ended Ceaușescu’s dictatorship.
Tour highlights include:
Learn how communism reshaped the city: from forced demolitions and property confiscations to the rise of massive housing blocks.
Stand before the Palace of Parliament—the world’s second-largest administrative building after the Pentagon.
Visit a church that was physically relocated on rails to avoid demolition.
Explore Revolution Square, where the 1989 uprising began and where Ceaușescu fled by helicopter.
See the site of violent 1990 protests, when miners brutally attacked students.
Hear from expert local guides about what daily life was like under communism—shortages, censorship, secret police, and resistance.
Tour Details
We begin at Revolution Square, where two contrasting buildings set the scene: the former Royal Palace, home to Romania’s last king, and the former Communist Party headquarters, from which Ceaușescu made his final, failed speech before fleeing the city.
Next, we head to 22nd December Square, a place of protest both in the 1990s and today. Here you’ll learn how it became a symbol of freedom and accountability, despite the tragic clashes that once took place.
The journey continues into the Old Town, where you’ll see firsthand how communist policies reshaped historic areas and everyday life. Expect stories about food rationing, power cuts, censorship, and the ever-present fear of the Securitate.
We’ll pass through neighborhoods altered to make way for elite housing and stop at a church famously shifted on rails to avoid Ceaușescu’s demolition plans.
The tour concludes at Constitution Square, facing the Palace of Parliament—an enormous monument to Ceaușescu’s ambitions and the most iconic architectural legacy of his rule.
